A lot of server installations NEED snmp service installed...

let me give an example:

Compaq Proliant servers installed with NT/win2K should be
running Compaq Insight Agents which are software agents
to monitor/manage the Compaq hardware
Compaq Insight Manager software is used to poll
the status of the agents (using SNMP and some other ports)

problems with hard disk, memory, backplane, temperature ....
can be seen before the major crash happens

Stuff like this are vital in an environment with dozens of Proliant
servers installed

I know that HP, IBM, DELL have the same kind of management software
agents for their hardware

just try to manage a network with a few hundreds devices (or even a few
dozen)
without SNMP .....

the same for unix or other environments ....
