A lot of server installations NEED snmp service installed... let me give an example: Compaq Proliant servers installed with NT/win2K should be running Compaq Insight Agents which are software agents to monitor/manage the Compaq hardware Compaq Insight Manager software is used to poll the status of the agents (using SNMP and some other ports) problems with hard disk, memory, backplane, temperature .... can be seen before the major crash happens Stuff like this are vital in an environment with dozens of Proliant servers installed I know that HP, IBM, DELL have the same kind of management software agents for their hardware just try to manage a network with a few hundreds devices (or even a few dozen) without SNMP ..... the same for unix or other environments ....
