Turkey Point is the nuclear power plant that was shut down today and caused most folks in Southern Florida to have no electricity. In 2006, the plant had a minor sabotage problem according to WikiPedia. Here's a birds-eye view of the plant at Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Homestead,+FL,+United+States+of+America <http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Homestead,+FL,+United+States+of+America&ie=UT F8&ll=25.434739,-80.331527&spn=0.002175,0.005021&t=h&z=18&iwloc=addr&layer=c &cbll=25.446375,-80.403957> &ie=UTF8&ll=25.434739,-80.331527&spn=0.002175,0.005021&t=h&z=18&iwloc=addr&l ayer=c&cbll=25.446375,-80.403957 Richard _____ Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_Point_Nuclear_Generating_Station Florida Power <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Power_%26_Light> & Light, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Regulatory_Commission> , and the Federal Bureau of Investigation <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Bureau_of_Investigation> were investigating the discovery of a small hole drilled into a pipe that helps maintain pressure inside the reactor.[5] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_Point_Nuclear_Generating_Station#_note- nyt-hole> This incident took place during a refueling outage when the reactor was not powered, and was quickly identified during power-up testing. The 3/16" hole was drilled into a 3" stainless steel schedule 160 pipe that would hold 600-degree-Fahrenheit reactor coolant water at 2235 psi under normal operation. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/02/us/02plant.html?_r=1&oref=slogin Small Hole in Pipe at Nuclear Plant By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: April 2, 2006 FLORIDA CITY, Fla., April 1 (AP) - Officials inspecting a nuclear reactor at the Turkey Point plant here found a small hole drilled into a pipe that helps maintain pressure, and investigators were trying to determine why it was there, Florida Power and Light, the plant's operator, said Saturday. The one-eighth-inch hole was discovered late Thursday during a series of inspections and tests performed before bringing the reactor back online, the utility said. A spokeswoman for the utility, Rachel Scott, said the plant was not in danger. The reactor, one of two at the plant, in Miami-Dade County, had been shut down for a routine refueling, Ms. Scott said. The utility repaired the damaged piping and, though the company's investigation continues, plans to bring the unit back into service in about a week, she said. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are also investigating.
