Hear, hear! - ferg -- Alex Eckelberry <AlexE () sunbelt-software com> wrote: I have four kids and have some direct observation in this matter. It certainly is symptomatic, Nick. When kids watch TV, sit on the computer or sit inside all day playing games, they become listless, bored and hyperactive. When they don't exercise, run, play and throw balls, shoot bb guns, hunt frogs, crawl up trees, they lose something vital -- not only their ability to learn about their environment through the natural trial and error of childhood, but the very essence of childhood. They also they become far more prone to being depressed or hyperactive. When they eat sugar or food with tons of preservatives or other unnatural substances, their bodies also react in not-so-pleasant ways. This even goes to the little things. Chemicals have an effect: I remember reading a study years ago where most of a classroom was "hyperactive". Researchers couldn't figure out what was wrong, so they sat in the class and just observed. The children were fine in the morning, but after returning from lunch, started to get really hyperactive. After extensive analysis, one researcher noticed that the teacher would wipe down each desk during lunch with an industrial cleaner. The children got back, breathed the vapors, and starting acting a bit loopy. Once the industrial cleaner was yanked, all was well. Simple allergic reaction. Our kids don't DO enough. By law, they're not even allowed to work, to contribute something. And look how things have changed -- here's what kids used to do in their spare time: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12655/12655-pdf.pdf Now they watch TV, play video games and sit on MySpace. To say that it's depressing is an understatement. On the other hand, some are on meds so that they don't throw coat racks at the school principal (long, but true story).
Yes, but Rob's comment addresses the "big picture" issue -- why is it that there has been such a massive increase in such seriously f**ked-up kids? Is it that there really are more "essentially hopeless" kids or that _other_, non-medical/chemical/hormonal/etc, factors are the main contributory factors? We know what the drug companies would love us to believe, but is the "pill for every ill", easy way out, really the solution, or a symptom? Regards, Nick FitzGerald -- "Fergie", a.k.a.
