It's just standard UK reporting/legalese.
like a suspended imposition of sentence, meaning he got 8 months time but is on "probation" for two years instead - actually serving the 8 months if he screws up his probation.
Yes, that's what it seems to mean: if he doesn't get into trouble for two years, he doesn't do the time. It's not necessarily (literally) probation: in that case, he'd have to meet additional requirements and there would be a probation officer responsible for him. At least, that's how it worked when I did some work for the Probation Service in the 1980s. It's probably all much more politically correct now. :) -- David Harley BA CISSP etc...
