The motivation behind this RFID card swipe system is to prevent kids from
being lost on the school bus system. However, the school bus transportation
system in the U.S. doesn't actually loose kids, although kids sometimes get
misplaced temporarily (ie, a kid is busy talking and he or she misses their
stop.) So when a frantic parent calls the school system looking for their
lost kid, the school system will be able to look into their tracking
database and tell the parent somewhere to look for the kid.

An enterprising reporter might want to a take a closer look at the
relationship between the vendor of this tracking system and the school
board. The Enron connection has already added some spice to the story.

Each morning, the 16,000 students in the Spring Independent School
District
in suburban Houston swipe their ID tags as they climb onto the school bus.
A
radio frequency tag tracks them, as it does when they arrive at school and
as they leave the building.

Sounds okay to me. Not sure that it will have any effect on the
violence in schools - but for that I would personally take the tact
the Israelis did a long time ago...
