And BBC World and CNN International have been reporting for most of the last 24 hours that the UK _airlines_ are saying that a total ban on hand luggage for flights leaving the UK is an untenable position going forward (in fact, while writing that sentence, the CNN segment with this claim has just started playing _again_). They (the airlines) are being diplomatic in not putting a timeframe on when they think the ban will have to be lifted, but the implications are "soon". First, the obviously huge overhead of the more intensive individual searches and other processing obviously slows down the check-in and security processes. But worse, moving normal hand luggage items like laptops, phones, music players, and other handheld electronics into checked luggage, en masse, has resulted in massive delays in checked luggage scanning, as all those electronics show up as "suspicious items" requiring more scrutiny per bag and many, many, many more hand- searches of checked luggage. That is why, several days after the initial alert, about 30% of scheduled flights from Heathrow are still being cancelled.
