Does anyone know how far this type of "ad-hoc" network will pan out? I
would guess somewhere between 11MB and 54 MB, but I could be wrong.

I have been working on a similar idea for some time.

Take the idea (go back to the old days of Usenet and Fidonet) of store and
forward. Take the idea of dynamic (and ad hoc) routing, and extend it. Add the
idea (currently used in CDMA2000, I believe) that units closer to each other will
be able to communicate at higher bandwidth.

Use this protocol in all kinds of devices: computers, routers, cell phones, even
appliances and toys.

With WiFi and cell phones, devices are in contention, either for the cell tower, or
for the access point. With the proposed type of system, devices are in
cooperation. With existing wireless (cell and WiFi) the more devices in a given
area the worse the service. With the proposed type of system, the more devices
in a given area the better the service, and bandwidth.

(Added benefit: once we get enough devices, telcos go bankrupt.)

Immediate objection: don't we still need backbone links? Not necessarily: devices
could become cheap enough to be dropped along roadways to maintain links
between population centres. Cell phones and digital radios in cars, digital radios in
aircraft, etc, also become part of the net and strengthen the links.
