Later, when they publish the signatures:

-It tells you you're infected
-It tells you with what, by name
-It gives you links to that name, where you can research what damage was 
done
-It will often clean infected files
-It will prevent a reinfection

All extremely valuable things.  Not as good as not getting infected in 
the first place, but vastly better than nothing.
