What if it costs $40M to do a proper spreadsheet, but $5M to convince
people your lame-ass word processor that you've already done is what they
really need?

The point of the market research is to keep you from making expensive 
mistakes by launching products that people don't buy. 

Note that a possible solution there is to convert the marketing for a beached
whale product into one that features "Now! With 200% more healthy fish oils
than the competition!" (Yes, I know cetaceans are mammals.  Convincing the
public they're fish is the marketing department's job...)
