No, he's totally right.  I don't run Windows - and if my Linux distribution's
auto-update told *me* that:

1) my box had a problem (when it was provably not so) and
2) the fix was to download an obsolete software package

I'd be complaining too.  One *does* have to wonder:

1) Is Microsoft's updater just on crack?  What will it break if you take the
recommended action(s)?
2) For XP SP2 and later, the EULA gives MS the right to download and install
basically arbitrary crap on your box without bothering to tell you, as long
as it's a "security" thing.  DRM *would* qualify.

It might be interesting if Dave can recreate the problem with a sacrificial
goat machine, and see what actually gets downloaded and installed....
