Network security -> application security -> software security -> ????

What do u guys think??

Depends which part of the world you are talking about.

In Sydney, it has basically gone from the old days of the 70s where things started to happen here and you could get a job as an operator just by expressing interest in it and being able to tolerate rotating shift work to specialties today. We have specialties for people wanting to backup their data, retrieve their data from drives that died, security specialists, programmers....etc etc etc.

In the 70s, "a computer job" was reasonably safe. The one "computer guy" seemed to do it all. These days no job is safe. Case in point - last year we had a severe I.T. related employment downturn here. This year people who do "home service repairs" to your average Windows home user exploded. They are basically, to grab an American phrase here "a dime a dozen". Charging $30 an hour is now average where last year charging $100 an hour was certainly not seen as too much.

This year there has been somewhat of a small "bounce back" in I.T. employment so some will get jobs.

However, my ultimate answer to your question is:

Network security -> application security -> software security -> "Do you want fries with that?"

....is where it is right now.

Greg.
