Allchin: Disclosure May Endanger U.S.
By Caron Carlson
May 13, 2002

A senior Microsoft Corp. executive told a federal court last week that
sharing information with competitors could damage national
security and even
threaten the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan. He later
acknowledged that some
Microsoft code was so flawed it could not be safely disclosed.

Are all Hungarian's as cruel as you? (That's a rhetorical question of
course).

Now, imagine if the US Federal Government considered Windows so insecure
that it was a threat to their national security (from the words of the
company itself. I coudln't remember who said it, so thanks for that)? As a
consequence they installed "something else" on the desktop. Serious coronary
time for Microsoft I would say.

On a vaguely related point, I hope most people realise that the main reason
for extending Windows 98 support was the number of people who are still
using it. It will have been supplied up till the end of 2002, so users of
hardware with a three year warranty (eg Dell customers) will be hoping to
keep using it till 2005. Would it help Microsoft if they forced these people
onto alternatives? Of course not, because they would be unlikely to come
back.

I do wonder if Microsoft will ever take into account OEM agreements when
they decide their "end of life" dates. Probably never.

According to the book of Acts, Eutychus was the first man to suffer from a
General Protection Fault with Windows.
