What is the issue with moderation? Why does a model where there are multiple moderators not work compared to this model? Please, no flames, I am seriously curious.
I think there are many reasons, but chief among them is that moderators will always apply their personal bias to what is or is not allowed through- that's the nature of moderation. Even the most objective, fair-minded person will disallow a post that someone else would have allowed. On any other list dedicated to security, the somewhat silly, but still very informative, recent back-and-forth between Aliver and others (The "Trash-Talker Challenge") would never have seen the light of day. A model with multiple moderators can be even worse- what one mod lets through, another shitcans. It's happened on other lists. Uniformity of enforcement is difficult (impossible?) to achieve on any moderation policy that is content-based. It's also an issue of perception- people tend to trust a forum dedicated to "full disclosure" if they know they can post to it at will and have their voice heard. I have to admit, the S/N ratio has gone up a massive amount since this list started, for which I'm grateful. I'm guessing it was mostly because of the change to "only subscribers may post", but who knows. Corey M. Snow- csnow () deltadentalwa com I don't speak for my employer.
