Focus-IDS Readers,

We've had some exceptional discussion on this list in the past couple of days,
with the recent Gartner report giving those in the IDS community a lot to talk
about. I've been pretty loose with regards to letting posts in this thread onto
the list, and as long as the posts stay on topic, and continue to be well
received by the list (I haven't heard any complaints yet), I'm going to leave
the thread open for continued discussion. Feel free to send me your comments.

On to business.

I have a couple more Focus-IDS related articles to mention that might be of
interest to people on this list. I'm a little behind with the announcement of
the Honeypots article, which was released about a week ago, however, it's a good
read and I'm of the belief that Honeypots will continue to play a role in the
IDS community as both technologies continue to evolve.

Here are the two articles:

Tracking Down the Phantom Host
By John Payton
http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1703
This article explains techniques on how to locate a problem host when you are
not sure where it is physically located.

and

Honeypots: Are They Illegal?
By Lance Spitzner
http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1703
Paper discussing the legal issues of honeypots. This was written with the help
of several legal authorities, including Jennifer Grannick and Richard Salgado.

If anyone has any comments, questions, or other suggestions, please don't
hesitate to drop me a line.

Regards,

J.
