Start by learning SMTP and reading mail server logs. 
Go to DOS prompt and type:


telnet your.mail.server 25
helo 123
mail from: kgiraldin () richland lib wa us
rcpt to:  kgiraldin () richland lib wa us
data
anything-you-want
.
quit
-------------------

# That is a enter-dot-enter up there before quit

And look at your mail server logs....
