Symantec's (e.g. Norton Anti-Virus) LiveUpdate uses a PKI and public key certificates to verify digitally 'signed' updates as well as a/v signatures (e.g. there is a 'root CA' cert in your local Symantec LiveUpdate installation with which it verifies the update and signature files downloaded). - H.
