For the cost of some of the new Sun machines (Netra X1 / T1 ac200) there
isnt much price difference between a brand name INTEL server and a nice Sun
...

My preference is Sun - but as I always say - go with what you know (ie: what
your organisation can manage and support). Nothing worse than a black box
firewall that no-one knows how to patch ...

FWIW, my experience with different hardware platforms for firewalls
quite clearly favours non-PC hardware. I've even had bad experiences
with units such as Compaq's 1RU boxes that lose PCI IRQ settings over
a cold boot - the sort of rubbish I've never had to deal with on Sun
(or HP's RISC) hardware. Then again, I've had good success using PC
hardware elsewhere...I just wouldn't trust it in an environment where
you were running mission critical systems and real money/lives were
on the line.

Linux sort of runs on non-PC platforms but never as well as the native
OS, such as Solaris.

The only downside of using FW-1 on Solaris is that there have been
times where their Unix management interface has worked differently
and had different capabilities to its remote one that is run from a
PC.
