Huh? I am very weak on database stuff, but I was of the impression that ODBC *wasn't* an on-the-wire protocol, but rather a calling convention for database libraries so that arbitrary drivers could interoperate with arbitrary database-enabled programs.
Exactly correct. ODBC is a database access API. The underlying database libraries may use a network protocol to converse with the database, but they're wildly different. (An application I support will work with Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL Server - all of which have different network protocols.) -Rick
