David, My understanding is that the export resreiction involves the sale of products and knowledge with regards to encryption technology. As long as you don't sell it, give it away, or set up permanent residence with the software in your posession, then you can transport it on your laptop.
This is the "Personal Use" exemption in the export control laws. If you are using this yourself (i.e. for *your* *personal* use), you don't have to get a license when you travel with your (say) PGP-enabled laptop.
Like all laws, the details will be very pointed. For example, I expect you could only transport the working program, not the installable media, nor an installable zip file, etc.
Not sure that this is true. You are certainly not allowed to give (or loan) the installation media to other parties, but if you took the media for re-installation after a possible disk crash, it doesn't seem to me that you're in violation. ObDisclaimer: Check with your lawyer, who will tell you that you can't do it anyway. ;-) - Ted ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ted Doty, Internet Security Systems | Phone: +1 678 443-6000 6600 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 300 Embassy Row | Fax: +1 678 443-6479 Atlanta, GA 30328 USA | Web: http://www.iss.net ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PGP key fingerprint: 362A EAC7 9E08 1689 FD0F E625 D525 E1BE
