Dear colleagues,

Please join me and the rest of the REN-ISAC staff in wishing Mark Bruhn,
REN-ISAC co-founder and long-time community member, a hearty congratulations
and a fond farewell as he starts his retirement!

From his early years as a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in charge of Air
Defense and Electronic Warfare Operations for the Air Force to his current
position as Peer Cybersecurity Assessment Service Engagement Manager at
REN-ISAC, Mark has dedicated his career to promoting physical and
information security at the institutional, local, regional, and national
levels.

When Mark came to Indiana University about 36 years ago, he toiled away in,
what IU President Michael McRobbie jokingly refers to as, "a dark, dank
basement working on security in relative obscurity." Mark eventually moved
out of the basement and into the role of Associate Vice President of Public
Safety and Institutional Assurance. In this position, Mark advised
university leadership on emergency management and response, administrative
and academic continuity, policing and community safety, homeland security,
emergency communications, enterprise risk management, and environmental
health and safety. He also supervised incident response; computer and
telecommunications systems security; and institutional and personal
information security.

As far back as 1987, Mark began to recognize a need for institutional
understanding and awareness of information security risks, and in that drive
to create a community of information sharing in the higher education sector,
Mark co-founded the REN-ISAC in 2002. While serving as REN-ISAC's Executive
Director from 2006 to 2014, he saw the organization grow from 60 to over 400
institutions, creating a community-oriented organization dedicated to
providing critical threat information and risk mitigation options to
research and education institutions.

Mark's professional accomplishments also include serving as an adjunct
professor of cybersecurity and other assurance topics in the IU School of
Informatics and Computing and playing an important role in the creation of
the IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research. He has also been an active
member and participant in EDUCAUSE through writing, mentoring, presenting,
and volunteering his time. In 2017, EDUCAUSE awarded Mark with the Community
Leadership Award for "meritorious leadership and advocacy in higher
education security and policy practices at the campus, state, and national
levels; for leading the development of a national center for information
sharing and analysis of higher education security issues; for mentorship and
community-building within the security sector in service to higher
education."

For the past two years, the REN-ISAC staff and members have been privileged
to work with Mark closely in his role as Peer Cybersecurity Assessment
Engagement Manager. He has been instrumental in developing a program that
allows higher education institutions to team up with seasoned technology and
security professionals for in-depth evaluations of security operations, data
management, identity management, governance, privacy, policies, incident
response, and other cybersecurity concerns.

Dear Mark, you've been "reelin' in the years; stowing away the time" with us
here at REN-ISAC, and we all, staff and members alike, thank you for all you
have done for our organization. It has been a privilege to work with you and
learn from you. We are all sad to see you go, but we wish you a happy and
relaxing retirement that gives you ample time to be with the ones you love
and do the things you enjoy.

If you'd like to send well wishes to Mark for his retirement, please feel
free to contact him at mbruhn () ren-isac net <mailto:mbruhn () ren-isac net> .

Best regards,

Kim Milford
