Dear Colleagues,
The Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC) continues to focus on three priorities in 2015: Strengthening
Foundations, Continuing to Build the Security Profession, and Advancing Information Security Strategies in Higher
Education. To learn more about our vision and mission, please see our new HEISC charter<http://www.educause.edu/heisc>.
This spring we have accomplished several important activities.

  1. Hosted the 13th annual Security Professionals Conference<http://www.educause.edu/sec15> May 4-6, 2015 in
Minneapolis, MN. This was our most well-attended conference yet, with 515 attendees in Minneapolis and nearly 80
virtual participants (with online exposure closer to 200).
  2. Connected over a dozen new mentees and mentors during the 2015 Security Professionals Conference. Since the
mentoring program for security
professionals<http://www.educause.edu/events/security-professionals-conference/mentoring/mentoring> launched in 2013,
we have received over 80 requests and matched over 50 practitioners and CISOs with mentors or peers.
  3. Published the 2015 Strategic Information Security Issues
infographic<http://www.educause.edu/library/resources/2015-strategic-information-security-issues-infographic> on April
24, 2015.
  4. Published “The Chief Privacy Officer in Higher
Education<https://www.educause.edu/ero/article/chief-privacy-officer-higher-education>” in EDUCAUSE Review Online on
May 11, 2015.
  5. Published two new career development toolkits in the Information Security Guide: Advance Your InfoSec
Career<https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/2014infosecurityguide/Advance+Your+InfoSec+Career> and Training &
Certifications for Security & Privacy
Professionals<https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/2014infosecurityguide/Training+and+Certifications>.
  6. Submitted a second letter to
NIST<http://www.educause.edu/library/resources/educause-comments-nist-controlled-unclassified-information-guidelines>
on behalf of the higher education community regarding Special Publication 800-171, as well as comments to
NTIA<http://www.educause.edu/library/resources/educause-comments-ntia-multi-stakeholder-process-cybersecurity-engagement>
on behalf of the higher education community regarding Stakeholder Engagement on Cybersecurity in the Digital Ecosystem.
Note: Please save the date for the 2016 Security Professionals Conference: April 18-20 in Seattle, WA, and online. (And
let your staff know!)
As always, if there are specific resources you’d like us to address this year, please let us know. And stay tuned for
our next update in September!
Thank you,
Elias Eldayrie and Melissa Woo, HEISC Co-Chairs
