We are moving forward with what I would consider a fairly ambitious plan of blocking network access for XP machines starting either on the EOL date of April 8, or the next day (April 9). I’m not sure on the exact date that the filters are going to be put in place, but we are most definitely keeping XP machines off of our wired network, our wireless, and our VPN. Needless to say, we have already begun notifying specific XP users and the campus community on the whole about this upcoming change. I would be extremely interested in hearing what communications tools other schools are using if they are also aggressively blocking XP instances from their network. This includes catchy XP End of Life slogans if such things exist. :) -- Brian Mertz Chief Communications Officer Campus Information Technologies and Informational Services (CITES) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign bmertz () illinois edu<mailto:bmertz () illinois edu> twitter.com/cites From: <Bohlk>, "Christopher J." <cbohlk () PACE EDU<mailto:cbohlk () PACE EDU>> Reply-To: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv <SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU<mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU>> Date: Friday, February 28, 2014 at 2:51 PM To: "SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU<mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU>" <SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU<mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU>> Subject: [SECURITY] Remaining XP Machines Hi All, I was wondering if you have determined how you will handle any XP machines that have not been removed or upgraded after the EOL? Do you plan on denying them access to the network using technical controls? If so, how long a period after the EOL are you planning on implementing such controls?
