You may want to try this question on either the Higher Education Email
Administrators list (http://listserv.nd.edu/archives/hied-emailadmin.html )
or the Windows in Higher Education list
(https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/windows-hied or
http://windows-hied.org/). They both have a number of subscribers who have
directly worked on transitions to Live@EDU and/or Google and could let you
know how they handled it.

Subject: [SECURITY] Outsourcing student email

We are currently in the planning stages of moving student email from our MS
Exchange system to Microsoft's Exchange Labs (live@edu).

We know that many other schools have done this to either Microsoft or
Google. We are wondering how other schools have transitioned current
students from one email address to another.

Exchange does not make it easy to forward mail from the old address to the
new. If we keep the old address operational for several months after
creating the new address this will provide time to transition (let the world
know that his/her email address is changing as of a certain date) but also
force the students to check 2 addresses for a while.

Thanks for any ideas you might have.
