Yeah, we're looking at something we can recommend to students. ClamXav is effective, but not really something I would encourage regular users to download/install/configure. We're a pretty Microsoft-centered shop and don't manage any systems ourselves. Sophos looks interesting, but the client seems to be more directed at the IT department and not the end user. Could be wrong, don't have any experience with it. Any experience with Kaspersky's Mac client? I'm a huge fan of their Windows AV, so I'd feel comfortable pointing people that direction. It just crashes and caused general instability issues on our Macs that were difficult to pinpoint, but went away as soon as Symantec's software was removed. Many of us tested Sophos's Endpoint protection (http://www.sophos.com/products/enterprise/endpoint/) and found it to not have the same problems. Unfortunately, we're not really in a position to pay for two A/V products, so we're hoping the upcoming Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 will have a better Mac client. Otherwise, for on-demand scanning, ClamXav does alright, but isn't a solution for real-time protection and isn't really easy-to-use for your typical end-user either (http://www.clamxav.com/). -Eric -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [SECURITY] AV client for Macs From: Stanclift, Michael <michael.stanclift () ROCKHURST EDU> To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Date: 11/5/09 2:20 PM
