Re: 3rd Party Internet Providers in the Dorms

We are actually looking at allowing 3rd party broadband internet
connections here. Our student wireless network is treated like our
incoming internet traffic. So a student on our wireless network only
has access to what a student coming into our network from off campus
would have. Wireless users are also blocked from communicating with
each other.

This is being looked at as more of a cost saving measure as we do not
want to replace all of our student switches with newer models, as the
current switches are quite old, when only around 10% of our student
population are utilizing this service. We are also looking at going
completely wireless with no option for a wired connection. Most of our
students use the wireless network exclusively. We are still in the
beginning stages of the decision/discovery process though.

Subject: [SECURITY] 3rd Party Internet Providers in the Dorms

I am wondering whether or not other university's allow their on-campus
students who live in the dorms obtain 3rd party Internet service? How
do you justify your policy? How do you protect the rest of your
network?

Thanks,
