Regarding shut down machines, we just use wake-on-lan to wake the
machines up in the middle of the night. We are then able to do all our
full virus and spyware scans, in addition to all software updates.

Subject: [SECURITY] Maintenance schedules for updates and scans.

Hi Group,

I would love to hear your solutions for scheduling non-downtime
maintenance such as OS updates, AV scans, etc. Our users are notorious
for shutting down their PCs in the evening (not to mention the labs) so
many times the maintenance does not get done in a timely manner. In
some cases the scans will happen once the PCs are online again. But
then, of course, we get complaints that their systems are running slow
during that time frame.

I'm torn between mandating a day each week where PCs must be left on for
maintenance or trying to find some kind of a "Wake-on-Lan" solution that
would allow us to bring systems online in the evening and shut them back
down again once maintenance is completed. The ladder is more in keeping
with our sustainability initiatives.

Please tell me what you do to overcome this issue. Thanks for your
advice.
