We (IT) use a combination of 3 software/hardware solutions that we've
tweaked to work as one solid solution for tracking, monitoring, and
security:

  > Track-It = http://www.NumaraSoftware.com [Helpdesk, Inventory,
Purchasing, Auditing, Reporting - integrated modules]
  > NetSight IM (and switching products) =
http://www.enterasys.com/products/visibility-control/netsight-inventory-
manager.aspx
  > Symantec Corporate - End Point Security =

Subject: [LICENSING] Software license tracking systems

This may be a very naive question as I'm new to software
licensing. What software systems are universities (or better
yet university systems) using to manage and track software,
especially restricted or charge-back software for PCs and
Macs (volume purchase, limited site license, etc.)?

We administer some system-wide licenses for the North Dakota
University System as well as provide distribution on our
campus for institutionally owned computers. It seems an ideal
system would include things like requesting/ordering, invoicing
the ordering group, purchasing licenses from the vendor(s),
tracking by installed location, number of licenses, reporting,
transferring, etc. Our process now includes several systems and
somewhat "manual" steps.

I tried searching the archives but didn't see anything too
recent (and there's a lot of "noise" when searching a software
licensing archive for software ;-). I did ask about OpenITAM
last year but I'm just trying to get an idea of actual systems
in use.

    Thank you!
