The Educause Security Professionals Conference is a low-cost event that
lasts1.5 to 3.0 days, depending upon whether you register for pre- or
post-conference events.  This year's event is over, but next year's
event is in early May in Arlington, VA.  See
http://www.educause.edu/SEC07 for this year's program and costs to give
you an idea of what it's all about.  Most presentations are lead by
peers and tend to deal with projects that can be done without a lot of
financial support.

I understand your thoughts about online courses to avoid spending
training money on travel, but the interaction and face-to-face time with
colleagues at this event is a very worthwhile piece of the puzzle.
