The following resource is being communicated to other higher education organizations in the coming weeks, including college and university attorneys and campus law enforcement administrators. We wanted to give you a heads up about this resource as well in case you have not already heard about it. Please feel free to pass along to others at your institution who might be interested. -Rodney Guidelines for Responding to Compulsory Legal Requests for Information Colleges and universities are often called upon to cooperate with law enforcement investigations or respond to legal requests for information. Institutions of higher education have long been accustomed to producing paper documents in response to various kinds of legal requests, ranging from subpoenas to search warrants to public information act requests and beyond. Increasingly, requests involve access to electronic communications, electronic records, or logs maintained for computer system and network monitoring. The EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force (http://www.educause.edu/security) has developed some guidance for college and university personnel to respond to these requests. To access guidelines and a set of corresponding resources, click on the "Protocol for Law Enforcement Requests" link at https://wiki.internet2.edu/confluence/display/secguide. -------------------------------------------------- Rodney J.
