I like Axcypt for personal use. It integrates well with MS Word. When you click on an encrypted word doc, it decrypts the doc and launches word. Then, when you save and close the file it encrypts and shreds the temp copy OpenOffice Writer takes too long to open however so you get a confusing window that says the application is taking too long, click here when the file is open. If you get impatient you wind up with unencrypted copies in the user's temp Axcrypt directory. I also like Password Safe, developed originally by Bruce Schneier but now a sourceforge project - very portable.

I'm going to be introducing AxCrypt to our Windows users - easy to install and use. What I like about it is the ability to encrypt a file with auto-decryption (creates and exe file) you can send to someone who doesn't have AxCrypt installed: http://axcrypt.axantum.com/ Mark Rogowski IT Security Technology Solutions Centre University of Winnipeg Ph: (204) 786-9034

I'm researching standalone encryption utilities that can be used to encrypt both files and directories on an internal hard drive of a windows computer and also could be used to encrypt data on external media such as flash drives and external usb drives. Is it appropriate for me to mention or ask for feedback on this security list for specific vendor products?
