Network management jack to port software inventory

Hello!

            Before developing any application, I would like to know how universities manage their jack to network port 
inventories. 

EX: IP switch; port switch; jack number; jack room number; department/services; device connected; special config

We would like to migrate from XLS sheet to a database. We didn't find any commercial application so we are thinking 
about developing one.

Let me know if you use any open source or commercial application that you would recommend.
