Our OS range from NT thru 2000, Unix, Linux and others. I was asked recently to find a way for A) an orderly shutdown procedure and B) an Emergency shutdown procedures for the servers. In the case of (B), not all servers may be covered. I currently believe that the only practical way to do this is using a tool (software or hardware or hybrid) to automate the process and am interested in views and experiences that you might have in the matter.
