(August 13, 5:05 p.m. PDT) - The University of Michigan has expelled a graduate student accused of hacking a computer system and using information to forge e-mails and get copies of final exams, the state attorney general's office said Wednesday. Ning Ma, 24, a Chinese citizen on a student visa, was arrested last month and accused of collecting information from more than 60 students and professors. Ning was expelled Friday, and the consulate has been notified of his arrest, said Sage Eastman, spokesman for the attorney general's office. The University of Michigan, citing confidentiality laws, said it couldn't confirm the expulsion, and Ning's attorney didn't return a phone call. According to the attorney general's office, Ning's expulsion revokes his student visa. A message left with the Immigration and Naturalization Service was not returned. Ning is charged with eavesdropping, unauthorized access to a computer and other counts. The fake e-mails Ning was accused of sending included one telling a student she was failing and another that canceled a student's job interview. - ISN is currently hosted by Attrition.org To unsubscribe email majordomo () attrition org with 'unsubscribe isn' in the BODY of the mail. ********** Participation and subscription information for this EDUCAUSE Discussion Group discussion list can be found at http://www.educause.edu/cg/.
