Research Expectations

We were recently preparing information about IT resources for our researchers. I was surprised that "safe computing" wasn't a requirement of the various funding agencies. It would seem that a lack of knowledge about the security requirements for IT equipment might be seen as "dangerous" just as a lack of knowledge of biohazards, research on human subjects, or research with animals. The last three all have institutional review boards which help ensure proper procedures are followed. I'm not necessarily advocating a review board but I think granting agencies should require attention to IT security. I was told that this was being discussed in one of the NSF directorates but I don't know what has come of it. And I suspect universities could require security consideration as part of their local procedures.
