Question on the use of Managed Security services

I have been receiving some suggestions to look at managed security providers. Recently someone suggested TruSecure. When I first got here a year ago, I thought the Managed Security Services didn't fit the University model well. But I thought of it as an "all or nothing" deal, and knew that we had quite a few groups on campus doing their own administration, and maintaining security on sensitive data. My other reservation came from the thought that the MSS groups basically did primarily network & host monitoring. The operational work, of keeping things patched was not outsourced. And neither was incident handling. Is anyone willing to share with me one on one, their experience with managed security services, and how they can be utilized in an academic environment?
