A former Spring Hill business owner convicted of wire fraud and
aggravated identity theft has been sentenced to 36 months in prison.

Stephen McLaughlin, 46, of Pelham, New Hampshire, previously owned
construction equipment company EquipLinq, Co., in Spring Hill and was
accused of forging the signatures of EquipLinq investors and customers
on false documents, according to a Tennessee Department of Justice
press release. Through the forgeries, McLaughlin investors and
creditors were defrauded of more than $100,000, the press release
stated.

FBI officials investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant
U.S. Attorneys Darryl A. Stewart and Kathryn B. Ward. McLaughlin was
convicted in February.

“This sentence validates the FBI’s commitment to relentlessly pursue
those who use identity theft to prey on unsuspecting victims and to
defraud lenders,” said Gregory W. Bowden, acting special agent in
charge of the Memphis division of the FBI, in a press release.
