At least 30 victims of identity theft in Madison area at big box retailers

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Investigators say identity thieves have netted
more than 200 thousand dollars in the Madison area in the last few
weeks.

At least 30 victims and likely many more.

Phony lines of credit were established in the victims’ names at big
retailers. At least two dozen of the victims live within a two city
block area of Sun Prairie.

Accounts were opened at stores like Macy’s, Sam’s Club, Best Buy,
Victoria’s Secret and other stores.

They say it’s possible the personal information used to set up the
accounts was acquired in a low-tech method like going through a
person’s trash.
