Stolen info on 3.3 million turns up uncompromised
Dan Kaplan
April 16, 2010

Removable storage devices containing the personal information of some 3.3
million student loan borrowers has turned up apparently untouched in a
police evidence room, according to published reports. DVDs storing the
confidential data were hijacked when vandals stole two safes sometime
between March 20 and 21 from the St. Paul, Minn.-based Educational Credit
Management Corp., a student loan guarantor. Police recovered the safes on
March 22 and only recently connected them to the data breach. None of the
sensitive information was compromised, reports said. . DK
