http://www.jisclegal.ac.uk/news.htm#300409 University Emails Breach Data Protection Act The University of Manchester published the personal data of 1700 students, including information relating to individual disabilities, in an email attachment that was sent to 469 students. The ICO has taken action resulting in the university signing a formal undertaking to ensure appropriate training and safeguards are in place to avoid inappropriate transfer and accidental loss or destruction of personal data. This is a stark reminder to all institutions that security must be a priority in processing personal data, particularly where this data is sensitive, and access must be restricted to authorised persons only. Such a breach could cause significant distress and must be avoided.
