                          SGI Security Advisory

        Title: Xinet K-Talk Appletalk(tm) xkas vulnerability
        Number:     20020604-01-I
        Date:       June 10, 2002
        Reference:  CAN-2002-0213
_____________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

It's been reported that the Appletalk(tm) package supplied on the
Applications CD with IRIX 6.5 creates a world writeable directory
(/var/adm/appletalk/icons/) that can allow a malicious user to read any file
on the system through the use of the xkas Appletalk administration tool.

  http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/bugtraq/2002-01/0329.html

While the version of Appletalk that is shipped with IRIX does not contain
the xkas binary, circumstances do exist where this world writable directory
might be exploited.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected in the Applications CD supplied with IRIX
6.5.16.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The Appletalk package is an optional package supplied with IRIX 6.5 on the
Applications CD. It is not installed by default, and is supplied as a demo
package only. It is not supported by SGI.

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

  # uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

  # 6.5 6.5.15f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.15f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if Appletalk is installed, execute the following command:

  $ versions -b | grep appletalk
  I  appletalk            11/05/1999  Xinet Macintosh Connectivity 9.02

If a line similar to the one shown is returned, then appletalk is installed
and the system is possibly vulnerable.

This vulnerability was assigned the following CVE:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0213

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

Check the permissions and ownership of the /var/adm/appletalk/icons directory:

  $ ls -ld /var/adm/appletalk/icons

If it looks like this:

  drwxrwxrwx  3 root   sys       68 Nov  5  1999 /var/adm/appletalk/icons/

...then you need to remove the world-writeable permissions. Execute the
following commands:

  $ su -
  $ chmod o-w /var/adm/appletalk/icons
  $ exit

Check to see that the world-writeable permissions have been removed:

  $ ls -ld /var/adm/appletalk/icons

...it should now look like this:

  drwxrwxr-x  3 root   sys       68 Nov  5  1999 /var/adm/appletalk/icons/

Once the above steps have been performed, the vulnerability has been
removed. It is not necessary to reboot the system after doing this.

SGI has not provided patches for this vulnerability. Please follow the
procedure above to secure your system. This vulnerability has been
corrected on the Applications CD supplied with IRIX 6.5.16.
