    HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY SECURITY BULLETIN: #0168,
    Originally issued: 01 October '01
 ---------------------------------------------------------------
The information in the following Security Bulletin should be acted
upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will not be

 ------------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: Buffer overflow in rpc.ttdbserver

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.10,
          10.20, 11.00, and 11.11.

DAMAGE: Unauthorized access, increased privileges.

SOLUTION: Until patches are available manually install a replacement
          rpc.ttdbserver file or disable rpc.ttdbserver.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Install a replacement rpc.ttdbserver file or
                disable rpc.ttdbserver.

AVAILABILITY: The replacement rpc.ttdbserver files are available
               now.

 ------------------------------------------------------------------
I.
 A. Background
A remotely exploitable buffer overflow in rpc.ttdbserver has
      been reported to HP.

 B. Fixing the problem
Until patches are available install the appropriate file
to replace rpc.ttdbserver. Another alternative is to disable
rpc.ttdbserver. The rpc.ttdbserver process is not needed for
the programs provided in HP's CDE product. It may be needed
by third party applications using ToolTalk. If you are not
using ToolTalk applications rpc.ttdbserver may be disabled.

         chmod 444 /usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserver

 C. Recommended solution

      1. Download rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz from the ftp site.
This file is temporary and will be deleted when patches
are available from the standard HP web sites, including
         itrc.hp.com.

          ftp site: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51).
          account: xgraphic
          password: xgraphic
          directory: ~xgraphic/CDE
          file: rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz

           If using a browser:

           ftp://xgraphic:xgraphic () hprc external hp com//xgraphic/CDE

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
a browser hang. To work around this:
             - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
             - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites

      2. Copy the rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz file to a protected directory
         and unpack it.
If you wish to verify the md5 sum before unpacking the
         rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz file, please refer to:

               HPSBUX9408-016
Patch sums and the MD5 program

The md5 sum for rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz is:

         MD5 (rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz) = 64ad589ec6dd55dceea2c92dc9ae9c19

      3. Install the new rpc.ttdbserver file using the
install_rpc.ttdbserver script or some similar procedure.
The install_rpc.ttdbserver is included in rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz.

For example on a 10.20 system:

            ./install_rpc.ttdbserver rpc.ttdbserver.10.20

      4. The rpc.ttdbserver.tar.gz includes the rpc.ttdbserver files,
the install_rpc.ttdbserver script, and the following:

Note: This site
 "ftp://xgraphic:xgraphic () hprc external hp com//xgraphic/CDE"
is temporary and will be deleted when official patches are available.

The install_rpc.ttdbserver script may be used to install the
special release versions of rpc.ttdbserver.

As root set the working directory to the location of the
special release rpc.ttdbserver files and

   ./install_rpc.ttdbserver <rpc.ttdbserver.xx.yy>
