Bit9 is better. We looked at Faronics, and it would be a nightmare to manage in our environment. I imagine if you're 
limited to a handful of apps, it wouldn't be bad, but in a University environment, UGH.

AE from Faronics is a good choice.  They have another product called DeepFreeze, but it's for workstations only I think 
that prevents any permanent changes to a system.

Instead of a malware scanner, why not a whitelisting program like Anti-Executable from Faronics?
No AV scanner will pick them all up, but anything not whitelisted will be denied and reported.
