In some sense, I believe that AV with blacklists/signatures/heuristics
is a poor attempt to solve the halting problem.

I'm putting my money on whitelists, strong authentication of some sort
and probably mandatory access controls - not to save the day, but to
give us a fighting chance. There are no panaceas.
