Wild Packets' OmniPeek also provides this capability with remote capture engines. It's a great tool, but $$$$ for the enterprise license. It is possible to place a tool such as wireshark on a remote pc then use a remote tool such as Windows remote desktop to take control of the remote PC and capture traffic. If the remote PC is actually on a large campus such as a university, and the network is Cisco (other switches might also have this capability), and there are no dedicated routers (such as a 2900 or 3800 routers -the Cisco 4500 and 6500 devices are switches not routers), a remote span port can be setup to mirror traffic across the switch fabric. This would enable you to capture traffic from the remote PC to a capture station. I have done this, and it's not difficult. Finally, some companies, I believe Opnet is one, make a capture tool that will send the trace file to a collection station across a network.
