Dear Martin,

Your case is indeed a bit weird. I guess you need to analyze the packet
headers of the ICMP echo requests that you send and try to reproduce the
behavior by changing one parameter at a time (e.g. traceroute sets the IPID
to 24647 whereas nmap sets it to 0).

Since Wireshark is my second most favorite tool after Nmap, I would try to
capture both ICMP echo request packets with it (from traceroute and nmap)
and compare them for any differences they may have. At least this should
serve as a starting point for your investigation.

Please keep me posted as I am very curious about the cause of this problem.

Thx,

Demetris Papapetrou

PS: You are welcome to send me a private email with a .pcap of your trace.
