How do I test functionality of an anti-virus and Idp device

Hello friends,

How do I test if a firewall and IDP device can actually carry out its functions. I'm supposed to do a demo 
demonstrating the antivirus and IDP features. How do I go about that, can I get a virus and send it to the device and 
see if it blocks it or do I try hacking into the network and watch if the IDP prevents it. If I'm to do all this, how 
do I get a virus and I can't even hack. Pls, I need help.
