Subject: accessing application through the internet

Hi,
I have an application that i need to allow other to access it through
the internet unfortunately ;(
my problem relies in 3 areas

1- i am thinking of setup a proxy server with iptable to allow access
for this application(open port xxxx)

2- iam concern on how to SSL the communication between the client and
server, i am still exploring my options, i was looking for open source
solution on both the client(XP) and the gateway(Cisco or linux)?

3- i have fair knowledge of security from my experience, i was
thinking to take one of the sans security courses and i was thinking
of taking the IDS/IPS course, not sure if i should take course in
different subject....does any recommend any?

Thanks
