I would highly suggest looking at the latest version of Kerio Mail Server. Besides email it operates like Exchange in allow shared contacts and calendars, can work offline, works great with Windows or Mac and works with most smartphones out of the box.

Unless you are prepared to babysit and operate your own mail server, I'd suggest something easy (although maybe less-featured) like Google Apps. You use gmail already, so all you need to do is sign up, point your domain mx records to Google, and have at it.Obviously that solution is not for everyone, but for a shop of 15 users, I can't imagine they have complicated needs or deep enough pockets for your time or the bloat of something like Exchange. If you do want to do your own, the given non-Windows solutions are fine. If you want a Windows one, I have used hMailServer, MailEnable, and ArgoSoft successfully in the past.<- snip ->I and need some advice on what software (related to mail) to use for a box that will handle about ~15 accounts.I'd like to know how your company handle stuff related to mail, like which MTA, spamfilter and so on.
