This may be a silly question but i could not resist asking it. Does TrueCrypt not provide an open source alternative to BitLocker? Or is this like comparing apples and oranges?
Truecrypt is virtual drive encryption, where it creates file based virtual drive that mounts as a real disk. Everything you place in that virtual drive is automatically encrypted. TrueCrypt can also fully encrypt "secondary" i.e. non-boot hard drive. But it can NOT fully the hard drive which boots the OS. This is where TrueCrypt differs from Full Disk Encryption solutions. A true FDE solution can fully encrypt the primary OS drive as well. TrueCrypt is an OpenSource. Linux and Windows versions available. MacOS X to be supported soon.
