I would highly suggest that instead of external facing FTP server, use a WebDAV server that is sitting in a DMZ. We have done this before and WebDAV is the best option. Few benefit of using WebDAV: 1) All traffic (authentication and data) goes over HTTPS (SSL port 443). 2) Most modern clients OS (Linux, Windows, MacOS) support WebDAV natively. So no need for your clients to download new software to their machines. 3) Supported on IIS or Apache.
